Hutt International Boys School

Located at the front entry heart of the campus, the design draws reference to the traditional school “cloistered edge” yet in a modern vernacular.  A simple smooth steel skin plate punctuated centrally at the entry by a recessed curtain wall greets first time visitors.  On the opposite side, a transparent edge engages the sheltered plaza.  A double height transparent atrium linked at the upper level by a floating bridge structure, internally separates building structure and function. A sheltered multi purpose gathering space for students was an essential requirement of the brief.  A Plaza was created and flanks the new Administration Building.  A tensioned membrane canopy structure covers some 1,000sqm to create an indoor/outdoor space providing shelter from all weather conditions.

This multi-functional Auditorium accommodates school assemblies, drama productions, social functions and a Chapel connected by three building elements – an auditorium box, a double height entry and function space and a chapel ‘drum’. Random thin slot windows that echo school ”House” colours are embedded in precast concrete panels that define the main auditorium space.
