WelTec: School of Construction
The WelTec Construction School is a new regional facility serving the wider Wellington Region. A new site on the Petone edge of State Highway 2 was selected to provide a shopfront to showcase the work of WelTec students.
Both WelTec and Hutt City Council required a building to provide an iconic gateway to the Hutt Valley.
The design consciously celebrates the teaching of construction with inclusion of space for erecting small houses. A workshop and teaching block provides references to “container” based site sheds. A simple steel-clad box form, and the inclusion of natural materials achieve a building devoid of complexity.
The facility provides students with ample space to work on real life construction projects as well as social spaces in the student hub area.
