Five Mile Villas have been designed to address the immediate housing crisis in Queenstown whilst strongly referencing tradition in the Southern Lake District. The development maintains links to the surrounding vernacular and pays homage to the region's heritage by referencing workers' huts and cottages through form, density, and humility. The result is elegant yet playful, with refined, modern, detailing contrasted with playful fenestration through louvres and window ‘frames’ acting as lively elements to the external elevations.
Indoor living continues the feeling of homely luxury, with timber panelled walls throughout and black accents. Each standalone home has a backyard which is landscaped to provide low-maintenance, year-round amenity to residents.
The design of the site maximises views from Shearers Drive out to the Remarkables through window orientation and elevation, with a grass berm enabling height and privacy, softening the transition from public to private. The prevailing winds are sheltered along Hall Street, protecting backyards and the interior of the main site with raised platforms, intentional landscaping, and building orientation.
The development is broken down into a network of shared spaces, pedestrian lanes, and communal resources ie; drying rooms. The alignment of the villas creates landscaped connections and micro-communities across the project, fostering meaningful relationships among residents.
